The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle necessarily to the strong. It's not always about the newest designer drugs with novel modes of action that will save the day. Sometimes, old is gold.
NSAIDs are making a comeback as a Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug (DMARD) in Ankylosing Spondylitis, seemingly able to not just relief pain (which is in itself an important diagnostic clue), but bring down inflammatory markers, improve function and even slow down progress...ion of new bone formation and spine fusion (ankylosis).
Cheap and good, and reasonably safe (as safe as placebo, it seems). Like steroids judiciously used in RA, vasculitis and Lupus, NSAIDs remain a cornerstone in AS therapy.
Don't be hoodwinked by all the pervasive fear-mongering to paralyse you into indecision and inaction. Weigh the efficacy, risk and cost of the various PROVEN therapies with your doctor's guidance, and take prompt decisive action.
