Current evidence does not support the routine use of calcium or vitamin D supplementation in post-menopausal women for primary prevention of osteoporotic fracture. Risk of renal stones is increased.

This advisory does not apply to patients with known deficiencies or metabolic bone diseases. The recommendation on supplementary calcium and vitamin D on secondary prevention (previous fracture) remains unclear.
